At fourteen I arrived in Victoria from Sudbury with a single parent, an alcoholic father who was “lazy and depressed” with little to look forward to. While volunteering for Mustard Seed, I learned of the establishment of the Open Door, recently started by Reverend Al Tysick. That was in 1990, the Open Door consisted of a few tables, about twenty street people, stale donuts, coffee and tea, and open only two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon. MPs Murray Rankin and Nathan Cullen hold a public forum in Victoria with guests from many organizations to discuss the strategies and successes for saving BC’s environment from catastrophe.

The Friends of the Dominion Brook Park Society are celebrating another year in their ongoing restoration of an area of North Saanich familiar to generations of local residents. The park, originally part of the Dominion Experimental Farm, which is actually more like a botanical garden, was established at the turn of the last century with plants sourced from around the world making it a unique destination for tourists.
