Sixteen dwarf apple trees found a new home on the grounds of Brentwood Bay Elementary this past month, courtesy of a grant from B.C. Hydro, which was given to twenty schools throughout the province. Brentwood Bay Elementary was chosen based on what they would do with the funds.
Ten year old Suzanne Fornier planted the first tree, together with Dr. Keven Elder, Superintendent of SD63 and Central Saanich Councillor Cathie Ounnsted. A Jonagold Red, described as a aromatic honeyed flavoured mid season apple.
Purchased from Fruit Trees and More in North Saanich, the trees were selected for maturation from early September to late October, and will grow to an easily manageable height of 8-9 feet. Proprietor Verna Duncan states, “You can expect to be picking fruit on most of these trees in two to three years time.”
Green Team Leader Fiona Mosher, who led the students in planting the trees, was also assisted by a group of students from Stelly’s Secondary. “It is a great way for the students to learn the concept of growing your own food.”
Dr. Elder added, “My thanks go to Fiona and the students, parents and staff of Brentwood Elementary for their stewardship of our environment and their passion for the planet. Brentwood is a great school that lives its beliefs of caring for self, others and the environment, ideals that fit within the Saanich School District’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility and green initiatives. Brentwood is evidence that our future is in very good hands.”
